Calculated Impulse

Gift Sets Collection and Products: Case Study

Calculated Impulse is pattern generation and application on products for the creative consumer and very much client-focused. Each pattern starts with a simple idea whether it is starting with a box and grid or a basic understanding of its final purpose.

After this initial idea, the designs are influenced by the mind and the main channels it could follow. They could go anywhere and may not always end up being what they were originally designed for. I like exploring where my mind can take me and work out how this exploration of thought can be used in a series of different products. Impulse can then relate to the nature of the product. Gifts should have the owner in mind and relate to them. Or the purchase could be totally out of impulse ‘i must have it’- the impulse shopping point of view.

The project is designed for people and I hope it will help when deciding on a gift for someone or just wanting to buy yourself something nice. Making the mundane less mundane. In addition, they are products that not only look pretty but also can be everyday items too. I want them to be practical and pretty.

Computer Set

These sets provide set packages available with themes and products to suit.  For the moment there are only two sets available but there will be more to come. Each is available in a set pattern which is decided during the shopping process. This way the buyer can tailor the set to themselves or the person they are buying for while providing more range in patterns and colours. While each product each available for individual sale the sets will offer suggestions hopefully making the process easier.

Aqua and Gold

This was the pattern that started it all, it was the first pattern I decided to put on something. Originally, I was going to use the gold pattern on the products but my mother preferred the aqua one. In the end, I thought it would be best to work with the aqua pattern so then I could get it made and she would be the first person to buy it.

The pattern was originally created from no preplanned idea but ended up looking very art deco so I made the colours match. I enjoyed working with period patterns and applying it to modern day objects. While making more products that can appeal to people who enjoy art movement pieces

Batman

The inspiration behind this pattern started with a box and a 1cm grid. After drawing up two different patterns from each corner, I shaded in the negative space black. This shape reminded me of the Batman symbol, therefore throughout the duration of the project it was named either ‘I’m Batman’/the Batman’ or just ‘Batman’. The colour purple came from my favourite colour, cheesy but I wanted to explore the different shades.

These sets provide smaller options and more flexibility when deciding what gifts to purchase. Old Mate

This design is called ‘Old mate’ because the original design is quite old. All the designs used are either from new or personal projects I have worked on over the years I've re-visited them and applied my new found knowledge form uni to make them new.

This one is probably the oldest out of all the designs. Originally, I didn’t make enough room to complete the design properly, I like things to be symmetrical and this one wasn’t, therefore, there was a lot of guessing and looking back and forth to complete to how it was meant to be finished.

BIAT 1 and 2 & 80’s BT

BIAT  stands for Bring it all together. I wanted to combine the different little sketches I had done in my books during my classes and combine them into one design.  BIAT 1 is the phone case where it only uses one element. Whereas BIAT 2 is the magnet and used all three.

On the other hand, 80’s BT is a reference to a design I created with the intention of becoming an 80’s t-shirt that didn't work but ended up being a back tattoo hence ‘BT’, the design worked perfectly and integrated well with the new designs.
